Niam Txoj Kev Tshua by Neeb Thoj

As a part of Hmong class at Edison High School, Neng wrote a true story about one of his mother’s experiences. His classmates helped illustrate it, and their teacher, Mr. Yang, published a few copies of the book for the family. The Thao family has partnered with FIRM to republish Neng’s book to help raise funds to support the Neng Thao Memorial Scholarship.

There is a scarcity of literature written completely in Hmong. Within Hmong literature, there is a lack of Hmong families’ stories waiting in Thai refugee camps, uncertain of what was to come. Completely written in Hmoob dawb (white Hmong), this book is appropriate for usage in a classroom or in the hands of anyone eager to practice reading Hmong. Loosely translated, the title means “Mom’s Grief”.

Chong Vang, the main character, lost her siblings in the war and the journey to Thailand. This is a story about loss, mourning, and learning acceptance. Chong’s family eventually arrived to the US and settled in Fresno, where Neng was born.

FIRM Honors Neng’s Memory

FIRM named the conference room upstairs after Neng and, along with his family, established an annual scholarship in his memory to support young scholars who share Neng’s passions for community and advocacy. Donations are accepted on a year-round basis for the scholarship fund. FIRM is also proud to sponsor a limited run of “Niam Txoj Kev Tshua” by Neng Thao to sell to the community. All profits from the sales will go straight to the scholarship fund.
