Refugees who have very few resources often rent apartments or homes. Occasionally, an unscrupulous landlord has tried to take advantage of their tenants, exploiting refugees’ limited English, cultural differences or fears about being deported.

Central California Legal Services (CCLS) is a strong community partner as a resource for legal assistance in a number of issues. Housing is one issue that they are passionate about! Their Housing Team consists of attorneys and paralegals that assist and advise tenants in Fresno, Merced, Tulare, Kings, Mariposa, and Tuolumne counties. CCLS’ main focus within housing is on residential Landlord-Tenant issues. Due to the imminent nature of landlord-tenant defense, CCLS prioritizes our resources on keeping families and individuals in their homes by avoiding eviction. This can be accomplished through several methods, including but not limited to education on tenant rights and responsibilities, negotiation and representation. California Rural Legal Assistance
California Rural Legal Assistance (who serves cities too!) has been very helpful to some of FIRM’s clients in resolving matters involving tenants’ rights, sub-standard housing, lockouts and utility shut-offs by landlords, rent deposit refunds and evictions.
