FIRM’s multi-cultural ESL and Citizenship class returned to life last month, thanks to a dedicated team of church volunteers led by veteran (and now retired) ESL teacher, Julie Warnes. A core team of teachers rotates days of teaching, from 9-11:30 a.m. Most teachers have had extensive mission experience in Southeast Asia, and one has taught in Armenia.
Student Dom Phanomsack expresses, “We are happy to have our class back, and to learn each day again here at FIRM!” Students study sentences and greetings, are improving their vocabulary and grammar, and continue to learn American history in the class. Teacher Susan Quinn says, “I just love working with these students. They have a truly grateful spirit, and have a real patient style of participation as we work together to figure out this new class.”
Six student interns from the School of Social Work at CSUF, from the Fresno Urban Institute ministries, and from Fresno City College also assist teachers during each class day. Additional substitute teachers are still being sought to assist with classes! Please contact: Rev. Sharon Stanley at [email protected] or 559-824-7826.
